Providence teammates Shannon Flockhart, representing England, and New Zealand standout Kimberley May, both members of the second-fastest women's distance medley relay lineup in collegiate indoor history and No. 7 all-time in the world, along with Alex O'Neill and Jillian Fenerty, after clocking 10:44.07 on Feb. 16 at the Boston University Terrier DMR Challenge, join DyeStat editor Erik Boal to discuss competing in the mile and potentially the DMR at the NCAA Division 1 Indoor Championships on March 8-9 at the TRACK at New Balance in Boston, Mass. Flockhart and May were also members of the Championship of America women's 4x1,500-meter relay team in April at the Penn Relays, joining Jane Buckley and O'Neill in running 17:11.35 to triumph at Franklin Field in Philadelphia. They both explain their focus is the mile semifinals March 8 and pursuing a qualifying berth in the March 9 final, and then communicating with Providence Coach Ray Treacy about the potential DMR lineup for the March 8 championship race. Flockhart shares her motivation to have another opportunity to deliver a better opening 1,200-meter leg for the Friars, with May explaining how encouraging it was to be able to chase several competitors on her 4:25.82 anchor leg at Boston University, which is the third-fastest 1,600-meter split by a female athlete on any indoor surface in collegiate history. May reflects on watching Flockhart finish seventh in the 1,500 meters at the 2022 Division 1 outdoor final at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore., and how much that inspired her athletic career at Providence, in addition to how significant it was for both competitors to qualify to race the 1,500 at last year's NCAA outdoor championship meet in Austin, Texas. They both speak about how meaningful it is to qualify for their first Division 1 indoor final together and how they have experienced NCAA cross country, indoor track and outdoor track championships as teammates. Flockhart and May revisit the World Athletics Indoor Championships in Glasgow, Scotland, and how inspired they were by fellow British and New Zealand champions and medalists. They examine how profound it would be to capture the first women's DMR title in Providence history, in addition to the potential to both become All-Americans in the mile and possibly secure the first championship in the event for the Friars since Amy Rudolph in 1994.
