UConn Sweeps Big East Indoor Titles For Third Year In A RowPublished by
Huskies Amass Meet Record 237 Points To Win Big East Men's Title, Women Win With 168 By Doug Binder, DyeStat Editor The University of Connecticut won its 12th men's Big East Indoor Conference title, but never in the fashion that it did over two days at the Dr. Conrad Worrill Track & Field Center in Chicago. UConn won seven events, including five field events, on its way to a whopping 237 points: Josh Mooney (heptathlon), Mawali Osunniyi (high jump), Marc Morrison (long jump), Travis Snyder (pole vault), Nicholas Connolly (shot put), and Kyle Johnson (triple jump) and Anish Rajamanickam (400). And Kasey Savage, who didn't win anything and was beaten by his own teammates in three events, was the high point performer for the third time, scoring 20 points for UConn in the triple jump (second), high jump (third) and long jump (third). Villanova's Liam Murphy won his second consecutive title in the men's 3,000 meters with a meet record 7:42.51 and he also anchored the winning DMR. Freshman teammate Marco Langon was second in the 3,000 in 7:43.83. Senior Sean Dolan won the men's 800 meters in 1:46.90. DePaul's Darius Brown broke a meet record in the 60-meter hurdles with 7.63 seconds, tied for No. 9 in the NCAA this season. Jarel Terry anchored the Blue Demons to a come-from-behind victory in the men's 4x400 relay (3:13.10). Georgetown's Joshua Paige won the men's 200 in 20.90 seconds. Runner-up Butler scored 116 points in the men's meet. Jasmine Barrow won the long jump and triple jump for the UConn women, who scored 168 points to beat runner-up Villanova. Providence's Kimberley May broke a 20-year-old meet record in the 3,000 meters when she ran 8:54.43 and she also anchored the winning distance medley relay. Georgetown's Melissa Riggins broke the meet record in the 800 meters, running 2:03.42. The Hoyas' Maya Drayton won the 200 and was second in the 400. Villanova's Jane Livingston won the 60-meter dash (7.47) and the 60 hurdles (8.18). |
